03/31/2008: Grant Recived from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
 Western Governors University (www.wgu.edu) has been awarded a $725,000, three-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), one of the most highly respected philanthropic foundations working to make meaningful change in healthcare for all Americans. The grant will be used by the College of Health Professions at WGU to develop online nursing degree programs, including a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. In addition to RWJF, other major initial corporate supporters in this effort include Hospital Corporation of America, Tenet Healthcare Corporation, Kaiser Permanente, Cedars Sinai and Universal Health Systems -- all large and well-known national leaders in healthcare. The goal is to address the national nursing shortage.
03/18/2008: WGU Works to Increase National Pool of Qualified Rural Teachers
 Western Governors University continues working with the U.S. Department of Labor to increase the national pool of qualified rural teachers, particularly in the hard-to-fill disciplines of mathematics and science. The WGU Teachers College is among the largest teacher colleges providing online teaching degrees with approximately 1,500 students enrolled in math and science teaching programs. A$3 million grant from the Department of Labor allows WGU to provide financial, academic and clinical support for teacher candidates, including scholarships up to $7,500 for qualified students. During the past year, WGU has worked with state labor and workforce development departments and local rural school districts to identify and prepare potential rural teacher candidates,including awarding of DOL scholarships.

 Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. (D- Colorado) has been elected to the Board of Trustees of Western Governors University (www.wgu.edu), replacing Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano who served from 2005 to 2007.Governor Ritter is committed to education reform, from preschool, to K-12 and into higher education. He is also working to integrate workforce needs and educational opportunities by bringing employers and educators to the same table to improve "real world" skills for graduates.
